February 2, 2017 With a cold breeze in the air, Seattle prepared to feel the true cold of classic Norwegian Black Metal. Mayhem was in town to play their first album “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” in it’s entirety in front of a packed house at El Corazon.
First up for the evening was New York’s Black Anvil. The American black metal band brought a fresh tone to the genre. The thrash styled riffs along side punishing vocals got the crowd all worked up. With horns raised high and a final chant by the band, the set came to a close with their song “Ultra“. Black Anvil is a band to watch out for on the road. Their captivating live performance is so raw it’s always worth checking out.
Next up for the evening were the Black Metal legends Inquisition. This duo always delivers a crushing performance to every show. The fast riffs of Dagon (Guitar) and pummeling rhythm of Incubus (drums) sent the crowd into a frenzy and the venue quickly turned into a whirlpool of bodies as the pit opened up. Inquisition blasted through their 45 minute set with fan favorites “Ancient Monumental War Hymn“, “Hymn For A Dead Star“, “Dark Mutilation Rites” and coming to a close with “A Magnificent Crypt Of Stars” off of their latest album “Bloodshed Across The Empyrean Altar Beyond The Celestial Zenith“. Whenever you see this bands name on any bill, make sure to be there. You will not be let down by the performance.
Finally, the moment the fans had been waiting for. The veteran masters of Black Metal Mayhem were about to perform “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” in full. With the stage set for the ritual to happen the crowd grew anxious with anticipation. The lights went out the crowd erupted with a monstrous roar as the band walked onto the stage. Dressed in long, druid like clothing, the band set a very eerie tone for the performance. The crowd quickly raised horns while chanting “Mayhem, Mayhem, Mayhem” as the band opened up with “Funeral Fog“. The hour long set came to a close with song ” De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas“. This was a special treat for the Black Metal fans to hear the classic album in full, from beginning to end. The band put on a phenomenal performance that won’t soon be forgotten. If you are lucky enough to catch any of the upcoming tour dates for this band, I highly suggest going. Not only will you get to see a well seasoned band, you will get to see Black Metal history played out before you.
