Sweden Rock Festival 2017 has come and gone for this year and it was another amazing event! Well organized, tons of great artists, ample facilities, vendors and experiences for the fans who come back each year as well as for the new fans who make it every year.
My week at Sweden Rock Festival week started out with roaming around the festival campgrounds and talking with early arriving fans who started arriving as early as Saturday to pick their tent spots and set up for their week long vacations. At Sweden Rock Festival, many people make it a full week event, not just showing up for the 4 days of music, but in advance to relax and enjoy some down time in the country area where the festival is located, but it’s also right next to the Baltic Sea so for anyone wanting to hit the water, that is an option as well.
I had a chance to chat with many fans and hear many great stories about their previous years at Sweden Rock Festival, their deep love for this particular festival and why they will keep coming back and what they were most excited for in this year’s festival. From stories of the earliest days of the festival when it was rather small to the days up to 2016 where attendance has grown to a little over 30,000 fans in attendance, the one thing that resonated with all the fans I talked to was that Sweden Rock Festival is special place and they hold it in such high regard. It’s more than just a music festival, it’s a tradition of coming out to have a great time, meet up with friends who not only come from Sweden, but from all over the world. Friends they’ve met along the way at one of their many trips to Sweden Rock Festival or a chance meeting at another worldly music festival who somewhere along the way decided to come visit and are now friends they consider to be as close as their own families. It’s hard to describe it in writing for readers to understand this feeling. I myself have been coming to Sweden Rock Festival each year for years now and the vibe is so different from any other festival I’ve ever been to. For me, it feels like home. It’s just a very special place and event.
Before this years festival we learned that Live Nation bought part ownership of Sweden Rock Festival and had all the fans wondering how that was going to affect the overall operations of the event. Sweden Rock Festival assured fans that on the local level things will remain close to the way they have been all these years and what has made this festival thrive. I can honestly tell all the readers that this years event didn’t have any recognizable changes to the festival. So, we will have to wait and see how the 2018 season unfolds before we will have any real answers for consumers of the festival. My prediction is that the partnership will bring in some bigger artists that haven’t been to this festival before and possibly a price hike in tickets, but that’s fairly normal as festivals grow and offer more to their fans.
2017 was another amazing year of music and fun at Sweden Rock Festival. With the amazing headlining artists: Black Star Riders, Aerosmith, Scorpions and In Flames we knew going into this it was already set to be 4 days of great music! The line up was bolstered with many loved artists as well as plenty of room for newer and upcoming artists to have a chance to perform on larger stages and to huge crowds. As well as one of my hometown favorites from Seattle, Metal Church! I’ve said this before, but it’s something I will say again and again, Sweden Rock Festival does a great job looking out for new artists and giving them a chance to be heard and found by their thousands of fans. That’s one of the special things about this festival is not only do they bring top notch artists to perform, they give a voice to the newcomers. This year was no different from years in past, I discovered a number of new local artists that I may never have crossed paths with back home in Seattle and for that, thank you to the organizers of Sweden Rock Festival. Some of these lesser known and newer artists that I think fans need to seek out are: VA Rocks, Veonity, Dead Sleep, Emma Varg, Leading Light and Art Nation. A few better known artists that I think fans also need to keep a close eye on are: Great King Rat, word is they are working on new music again! Corroded, these guys put on one of my favorite albums this year called ‘Defcon Zero’ that’s just full of great music! I am hoping North America will get lucky and get a tour from them soon! And finally, Mustasch! They are working on new music that will be coming out early next year and that means there’s a really good chance we will be seeing them out on tour in North America too!
While at Sweden Rock Festival we chat with a number of artists who were performing this year, some of the big names, some of the lesser known names that we felt it was important for you to learn about. You can check out all of the interviews on our YouTube Channel. We will kick off the interviews with one of Sweden’s biggest known bands who have been making music together for 20+ years now and have had great worldwide success, a name many of you know well…. In Flames! Here’s the chat I had with the one and only Björn Gelotte; axeman, craft beer connoisseur and all around nice guy. See what he had to say below:
