Last week British rockers Diamond Head hit Seattle before heading into Canada on their current North American tour. This leg of the North American tour kicked off in at Psycho Festival in Las Vegas last week and will end in New York City on September 11th.
The lineup for the night included Salem Knights, Ape Machine, Skelator, Substratum and Diamond Head.
The show kicked off with Salem Knights, a 3 dude metal group hailing from Seattle. The guys delivered some decent metal to ready the fans for a night of metal and rock n roll. Great way to start the evening.
Next up for the night was Ape Machine from Portland, OR. This rock band had a sound that was a mix of stoner, grunge and just plain old rock n roll. Entertaining and good music, worth checking out if they come your way.
Having not had a chance to see Seattle band Skelator before I was looking forward to finally getting a chance to catch them live. These guys are making some great metal music with vocals that blew me away. I felt as if I was thrust into the late 80’s era of Helloween vocals of Michael Kiske as frontman Jason Conde-Houston starting singing. Then there was the song that had theatrics and a sword, can I just emphasize on how much of a great moment this was? The fans really enjoyed this set and for the first time in the evening there was full headbanging and hair flying every direction. Everything metal used to be and still should be is definitely what Skelator is. You have to check these guys out, they are headed on West Coast tour in October so catch them if you can.
The next band on the lineup and the last of the local support was Substratum. I’ve had the good fortune to see this band a few times and really dig their music. This female fronted metal band always delivers great metal music. Fans crowded the stage and once again the headbanging ensued. Substratum knows how to entertain the crowd and please the metal senses. Check this band out when they come your direction, you will get a full metal bangover from them.
Last up, the band fans were all excited for, Diamond Head. I had the great fortune to see the band last year so I knew that the fans were in for one hell of a great show. Diamond Head has been making music since 1976 and have a killer sound and songs that fans instantly recognize and hope to always here at one of their shows. Over the years the band has taken a pause and changed some of their members, but one thing that’s never changed is their killer sound and the passion in the music. With so many bands making music all over the world today, it’s hard to stand out. But for bands like Diamond Head, standing out is what they do, simply because of making consistently great music.
The last time Diamond Head performed in Seattle was 2011. This show introduced the fans their Danish vocalist Rasmus Anderson, who’s been on vocals with Diamond Head since 2014. Missing on this tour was Abbz on guitar. The band kicked off the show to a sweaty and rowdy crowd who were ready for one final dose of rock n roll for the night. Fan cheered as band founder and lead guitarist Brian Tatler hit the stage. Diamond Head rocked the fans with old and new songs and wrapped up the show with “Am I Evil” and “Play it Loud”. After the show the band took time with fans to take photos and sign albums.
Diamond Head released their latest self titled album in 2016. They are currently working on a new studio album and are looking to finalize recording later this year. So keep your eyes open for a new album sometime in 2018. I had a chance to chat with Brian Tatler while they were in town. You can check out the interview we did here.
