4.0/5.0

Do you like blood?  Do you like violence and obscenities?  Then I have an album for you.  The shock rock masters Gwar are back with a new album called “The Blood Of Gods“.  This is the bands first album since 2013’s Battle Maximus.  It’s also the first album since the unfortunate passing of Oderus Urgungus.  Luckily for the Gwar members, a new vocalist named Blothar has stepped up to take on the challenge of leading the band.  The album talks about a lot of different topics from Oderus‘s passing, current political affairs, and even a fast food restaurant.

The Blood Of Gods begins with a song called “War On Gwar” that helps set the tone and scene for the entire album.  The song is a bit long but helps the listener understand what to expect from the album.  Following that is a song called “Viking Death Machine“.  It has an older Gwar sound that is a little more punk.  This is a fun song that will definitely be a crowd pleaser live.  Next up is the song “El Presidente“, obviously this song is directed at a certain politician.  In the song Blothar talks about the state of the United States and how horrible it is.  Then at a certain point he threatens to kill El Presidente and take over America.  Following that is “I’ll Be Your Monster”. This is a fun rock and roll style song.  It is a bit slower paced but will keep you interested the entire time.  Next up is “Auroch“.  This is a fun ripping thrash song.  Half way through it sounds a lot like “Hell Awaits” from Slayer and then after the solo that is played it sounds a bit more like Slayer.  It’s a fun song that will for sure stir up a few circle pits live.  Next up is “Swarm“.  This is a fun overall good metal song.  With lyrics about human beings being scum and killing off the world it almost seems to have a message in it just thrown at you the only way Gwar can.

The second half of the album is a bit all over the place but still really fun.  It starts off with a song called “The Sordid Soliloquy Of Sawborg Destructo”.  If you aren’t familiar with Sawborg Destructo I highly suggest looking back into some of Gwar‘s earlier work.  Following that is “Death To Dickie Duncan”.  This song is a bit out there but pretty entertaining none the less and it has some sweet riffs throughout.  It almost reminded me of when Bonesnapper appeared on “America Must Be Destroyed“.  Following that is “Crushed By The Cross”.  This song is very fast and definitely has a thrash feel to it.  It sounds a lot like how the last few albums have sounded.  Next up is “Fuck This Place”.  Not only is this song catchy and heavy it seems like a song about them calling out to Oderus about how much they hate earth.  This one will be a fan favorite I am sure just by the tone of the song and killer riffs by Pustulus Maximus. With a very cool and almost haunting outro, the final song for the thematic part of the album is “Phantom Limb”.  This is a song in honor of Oderus about how they feel his presence like a missing limb.  It almost feels like a ballad through some of the song.  Either way it is a great way to end the thematic part of the album.  The final song on the album is a killer cover of AC/DC‘s hit song “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)”.  I can’t think of a better song to end a Gwar album.

‘The Blood Of Gods’ will be available at most music retailers on October 20, 2017.  This is an album I highly recommend picking up.  Not only if you are a Gwar fan, but as a rock or metal fan.  This album has a little bit for everyone on it and it will not disappoint you.
