Sons of Apollo Live In Joliet – Hard rock’s newest supergroup, Sons of Apollo, just finished their first tour in support of their debut album, Psychotic Symphony, with a show in Illinois at Joliet’s The Forge on February 18th.
The group, who seem to have a great personal chemistry, is made up of five monster rock talents: Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big/The Winery Dogs/The Fell) on bass, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater/The Winery Dogs/Metal Allegiance) on Drums, Ron “Bumbelfoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses) on guitar, Derek Sherinian (Black Country Communion) on keyboards, and Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen/W.E.T.) on vocals.
The groups show, similar to their album, centers around the collective members musical chops and the rich and tasty musical stew that is created when all the cooks are in the kitchen. The music is of a prog rock variety, incorporating elements of classic rock and high tempo thrash at times…all of it with Jeff Scott Soto’s melodic touch on it. At times I heard influences from Deep Purple, Van Halen, Rush… maybe even Primus.
The fun part of a Sons of Apollo show is getting to see so many high caliber musicians on an intimate stage at the same time, hence the supergroup label used above. The chemistry between the members of SOA extends to the musical realm as well as they seamlessly trade off licks and runs that are impressive and fit within the collective movement of each song. For those looking to see if these virtuoso’s put the pedal to the metal, there are solo turns for each.
Despite it being commonplace these days for musicians to be involved in multiple bands at the same time (Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy each seem to be in about four groups!…not to mention the other group they are in together – The Winery Dogs), the Sons of Apollo are committed to the cause and have just announced a Spring tour for April and May (dates here), before heading overseas for dates in June – September.
