There’s something special about the Texas region when it comes to rock music, especially around the Dallas area. I did my time in Austin, Texas for many years and the rock scene was something else! It’s no surprise to me to see another amazing band coming from this area, especially with big hitting bands like Pantera, Drowning Pool, Kings X, Hellyeah all coming from this same area as well as one of our 2017 favorite albums from Dallas’ Blindwish last year. While not all members are Texans from birth, there’s a saying that holds true, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but got here as fast as I could”, and that certainly holds true for a few of the guys who have now made Texas their home. This area always has been and will continue to send us great new rock releases. This particular time I am talking about the band Messer! If you missed our live coverage of Messer from Austin back in February, go back and check it out now before this album releases. You want to know who Messer is! Their sound is so intense and authentic it is going to kick your ears into overdrive!

Let me start by telling you that Messer makes this killer sound that is twist of alternative rock music with an occasional blast of metalcore infused into their sound. It’s big, it’s heavy and still holds this melodic tone that makes the music fresh yet familiar. When a track on this album is not fast, heavy or melting your face off, it’s still big, intense and rocking you. Their technical finesse throughout this album is spot on. This album is recorded well and mixed to perfection without being over produced to give this massive raw feel to the sound of their music. Messer managed to capture truth and authenticity in their sound through the entire album. Something that is not an easy thing to do today in a world that’s so over produced that it loses the fundamental feel of rock music. So bravo to Messer for such a great sounding album!

When you do a track by track look at the album, there are some that are just heavy, kick your ass tracks with crazy guitar riffs and bass lines, while others are less intense yet will dominate your senses. The drumming on this album is substantial and perfectly matched to each track. Lastly, the vocals…. I simply dig Dereak Messer on vocals! His voice has a rich tone and he uses it with the perfect intention through each track.

A few of my favorite tracks on this album are “Fight Of My Life”, there’s this cool, raw distortion on the vocals in the opening of the song that put emphasis and focus on the vocals. Then manic tempos take over the track and energize the music. Any fan of rock music will feel like they took radio waves straight through the heart as they are left ready to rock through this track. “Simple Man” comes out swinging from the first vocal shout “GO!” and just rocks you through the entire track while tossing some gritty riffs, manic drumming beats and heavy bass lines at the listener. One of the others I really enjoyed, “Whiskey” just a great rock n’ roll track with some of the raw and grittiest vocals on the album.

The entire album doesn’t have a bad track, so you honestly can’t go wrong with any song they’ve added to this release. I think Messer found the magic combination writing with Chad Gendason on this one. They found the perfect punchiness to their sound that as resulted in one hell of an album.
