Iconic British Heavy Metal Band Saxon Rocks Seattle – Saxon rolled into Kent, WA with Judas Priest and the Black Star Riders for an evening that won’t soon be forgotten by any in attendance.
Since their inception in 1977, the English metal lords, Saxon, have released numerous live albums and 22 studio albums, with their latest release, Thunderbolt, being released on February 2, 2018. They are known as metal pioneers by many and have forever cemented their place in metal history as well as inspiring many to become metal musicians.
We caught Saxon last summer at Sweden Rock Festival where they performed in all their metal glory on a gigantic festival stage to tens of thousands of fans. I was personally curious to see how their stage show would unfold on this tour. It has been a few tour cycles since Saxon last performed in the Seattle area as well as on a proper, large stage. With the popularity of the Firepower 2018 North American tour, Saxon was set to once again be back on an arena stage for fans to bask in their greatness.
The show started off with a taped intro of “Olympus Rising” then the band went straight into the title track from their newest album Thunderbolt. It was clear many of the fans were long time Saxon fans. As the band transitioned from each song fans could be seen and heard singing along to not only the new album tracks but also the iconic hit songs as they popped up in the setlist. Surprisingly, many fans were already well introduced to many of the songs off of Thunderbolt. Tracks such as “Thunderbolt”, “They Played Rock and Roll” and “Sons of Odin” went over extremely well to the live audience. Fans collectively lost their minds numerous times as Saxon performed old-time fan favorites “Power and the Glory”, “Motorcycle Man”, “Denim and Leather”, “Princess of the Night” and “Heavy Metal Thunder”. Saxon completely took control over the audience, making every audience member theirs for their set.
The band performed with their usual high energy with the always welcomed head banging from Biff Byford and the crazy intensity from bassist, Nibbs Carter, who never stands still during a show, jumping from platforms and wildly head banging. Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt commanded the axes while Nigel Glockler forced them all to keep up to his drumming tempos! Of course not all of the guys are as physically intense as Carter, but they equally match his intensity with sharp technical skills and amazing musicianship. There was not a dull moment during Saxon‘s set.
Whether you’ve been a fan for decades, years, months or just new to Saxon all together, there’s a rich musical history to enjoy. Old albums to new albums there’s one thing that always reigns true when it comes to Saxon, they make metal music their way and it’s always worth picking up every new album they release. That musical magic is the exact reason Saxon is still going strong today! Tonight is the last night of the North American tour as they wrap up in San Antonio, TX before heading off for a few dates south of the border before heading back to Europe for the summer festival season. For our European readers, make sure to check out Saxon‘s European tour dates starting in September and grab tickets to see one of their shows. And for all of you who’ve yet to grab a copy of Thunderbolt, do that today!!
