Sons of Apollo Perform at Seattle’s Showbox – Last week the Sons of Apollo made their way to Seattle on the second leg of their North American tour in support of their October 20th release ‘Psychotic Symphony’. The super group made of former Dream Theater members Mike Portnoy and Derek SherinianRon “Bumblefoot” Thal (ex-Guns N’ Roses), Billy Sheehan (The Winery Dogs, Mr. Big, The Fell, David Lee Roth) and Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Journey, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force) came ready to rock.

The show was opened by L.A.’s Sifting. This is a band I’d never heard of before this show, but definitely one I want to hear more from. These guys put on a live show full of high energy and great music. Keep an eye on these guys!

Second up for the evening and also from L.A. was Felix Martin. Now, if I wasn’t already intimated by my own beginner guitar skills knowing that Ron Thal and Billy Sheehan would be hitting the stage with their signature double neck guitars and putting my skills to absolute shame, I got yet another reminder as I looked before me to see Felix Martin‘s double neck guitar. As luck would have it, Javier Sepulveda also had a double neck bass as well.  So while I watched in complete amazement, the words began rolling through my mind….. I’m not worthy…. The skill and ease to which each note and chord rolled off the strings was really something to watch. These guys captivated the audience before them and the fans watched in delight at what was unfolding before them. What a great set. Make a point to see Felix Martin if you get the chance!

The crowd was well warmed up by the time the Sons of Apollo hit the stage for their set. With this all-star line up, fans knew they were in for something special for the evening. Being the second leg of their North American tour, Sons of Apollo already had the opportunity to work out all the beginning of tour hiccups on the first leg and seemed to perform with ease and very much in sync with each other. The many years of talent shared between these 5 is nothing short of musical genius and that came through loud and clear as the band performed throughout the evening.

The sheer talent and technical skill each member brings to SOA stands out, all while blending into this beautifully magnetic sound they’ve created. From the unmistakable distortion in Sheehan‘s bass, to the wailing coming from Bumblefoot‘s finger tips, to the humming of Sherinian‘s keys/organ, filled with the underlying foundation of Portnoy‘s powerful and intentional drum tempos, then topped off with Soto‘s powerful and recognizable vocals, SOA created the perfect album to perform live! The showmanship was flowing naturally as the music filled the venue. Fans were cheering and singing along to the music, to which the band instantly fed off of their energy.  The Seattle fans could not have asked for a better live tour to come through our city. The Sons of Apollo gave all their energy and wow’d every fan in the venue.

The Sons of Apollo are making their way across North America now before they head to Europe, Japan, Russia, Israel for some summer festivals and solo dates. I also just learned that a new date has been added in the USA on September 7th at Prog Power USA in Atlanta. So get out there and see this band perform live and if you have not picked up a copy of ‘Psychotic Symphony’ yet, do that today.
