Suicidal Tendencies

Tuesday evening, Suicidal Tendencies kicked off the start of their Canadian tour at The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver, B.C. Along on this tour is special touring guest member, Ben Weinman (The Dillinger Escape Plan) on guitar.

For those long time fans, you know how explosive Suicidal Tendencies are live, but I have to say that the addition of Weinman on this tour, has taken the show to a new level of energy. You only think you are prepared for this tour… when really, you are not!

Those who know Weinman from The Dillinger Escape Plan, know the intensity to which he’s always performed with. So adding him along side Mike Muir, Dean Pleasants, Ra Diaz and Dave Lombardo…. one has to expect this would create the perfect storm of ballistic energy. That’s exactly what happened Tuesday night!

Fans lined up a few hours before the doors opened and could be heard reminiscing over their years of enjoyment of Suicidal Tendencies. One fan even threw his arms in the air from across the street from the venue and let out a loud yell of “SUICIDAL TENDENCIES”, to which fans in line responded with loud cheering. Clearly this set the expectations of one hell of a night to come for all the fans and warned the random passerby’s on the street that something crazy was about to happen.

The show kicked off with Extinction A.D. a heavy metal band from Long Island, New York. These guys were fierce and put on a great set that had fans moving and starting building up the intensity level of the evening. Definitely worth it for the fans who arrived early to catch their set!

Second up for the evening were Havok from Colorado, who’ve toured with Suicidal Tendencies before. Having seen Havok numerous times before, I knew what was about to unfold on the stage before us as well as the pit that was going to open up behind us. One thing Havok is known for is the ability to stir a pit and they did just that! They put on an insane set and the fans throughly enjoyed themselves as they body stewing continued through the set. Make a point to get out and see Havok when they come your way. Always a great live show!

I don’t have to tell you how great Suicidal Tendencies are live, but I will! These guys have been the soundtrack to my life since I was a teen in the 80’s. A pioneering force in the punk realm, fans have come one by one and stood by SxTx for decades and have introduced their own children to them as the years have passed creating a new generation of fans to follow them.

It was hot in the venue before the show started and by the time Suicidal Tendencies hit the stage it was swampy hot and only standing room in the venue. With their signature tracks that start out slow and progress into insane tempo tracks with raw lashing lyrics, they quickly ignited the crowd. The pit opened immediately and fans started surfing over the barrier during the first song of their set “You Can’t Bring Me Down”, and kept flowing over throughout the show. You could hear fans singing along loudly and cheering as arms were raised up in the air displaying fists.

Fans always wonder how they manage to keep up the energy at their shows, because it’s nonstop action. I asked bassist, Ra Diaz, how they keep up the energy and he said, “We just man up and do it haha!” I guess that’s the only way it can be done, because it’s just insane fun to watch them as everyone is running back and forth across the stage, jumping, kicking and then repeating. Which makes for one of the most entertaining live shows fans can see. These guys give their all for the fans!

The band played numerous classics and some of the newer stuff on this stop. They wrapped the show up with the cult classic “Institutionalized”, the song that will forever be known as the “Mike just wanted a Pepsi song.” It’s safe to say that the band and fans alike, were exhausted by the end of the show! Great night out.
